Quebec City, Quebec – Professional interior designer and Instagram influencer Alex Bucklin, founder of Bucklin Design Co., selected Tando Composites’ Beach House Shake® to bring a timeless New England aesthetic to her latest project in the Midwest. Raised in Connecticut and inspired by coastal homes throughout the Northeast, Bucklin sought to recreate New England’s distinctive architectural style for her family’s new 4,200-square-foot residence in Southeast Michigan.
“We wanted to bring the authentic cedar shingle look to the Midwest and have it stand out more than every other modern farmhouse; our goal was to create a home with a timeless design,” said Bucklin. “We loved the look of traditional cedar shingles, but we didn’t want the constant maintenance and or costly, painstaking installation that comes with it. Beach House Shake offered an ideal solution that delivered an authentic shingle appearance with simple installation similar to traditional siding – but without any of the upkeep.”
Construction began in June 2024 following the demolition of the previous home on the property. The new build features Beach House Shake in Atlantica, a silvery gray tone reminiscent of bleach oil natural cedar shingles. Some fun coastal design elements include functional cupolas with working porthole windows. Unlike traditional wood shingles, which are fastened individually, Beach House Shake can be installed quickly in panels, allowing a smaller crew of siding installers to complete the exterior in significantly less time.
Manufactured by Tando Composites, Beach House Shake combines the look of natural cedar shakes with advanced composite technology, delivering both beauty and performance to any exterior. Each panel features realistic wood grain textures and varied saw cuts to replicate the look of hand-laid cedar without pattern repetition.
Accessories mattered for Alex as well. Beach House Shake offers matching corners, eliminating the need for trim and delivering a finishing touch to the structure. “Beach House Shake’s corner pieces were a major selling point for us and really enhanced the overall design,” said Bucklin. “The finished corners create a much more natural, seamless exterior aesthetic without white trim breaking it up.”
Unlike natural cedar shingles, which discolor quickly and unevenly - Beach House Shake’s composite technology stays looking like the day it was installed for the life of the home, Beach House Shake has also earned Miami-Dade County approval for High Velocity Hurricane Zones (HVHZ), verifying its ability to withstand demanding weather conditions.
